During the opening tutorial, you face a demon in scripted combat. To become a demon, intentionally lose — stop attacking, let your health deplete, or die to the enemy. The game flags your account as demon faction and skips Slayer onboarding.

This choice is permanent on that character until a Wipe Potion from codes or trades resets your account. If you accidentally won and wanted demon, you must wipe and restart. Slayers cannot become demons without wiping.

After the tutorial, demons spawn into the purgatory progression chain — a separate quest line from Kamakura Slayer quests. Follow NPC markers through demon hubs, unlock Blood Demon Art slots, and grind levels without Nichirin Breathing forms initially.

Choose demon if you want BDA fantasy, Hybrid endgame, or Moon Breathing eventually. Choose Slayer if you want straightforward Breathing progression, Final Selection lore, and Sun after Prestige via the Prestige guide.

Many metas favor Slayer for accessibility; demons reward players who accept slower starts for powerful Hybrid payoff. Use an alt account to try both paths before wiping your main.

The purgatory path sends demons through a linear NPC chain distinct from Kamakura Slayer quests. Each step unlocks new spawn access, BDA slots, or stat milestones. Skip no dialogue — optional purgatory side objectives sometimes grant yen or consumables that speed early leveling.

Purgatory zones host stronger demon NPCs than tutorial fields. Party with other demons when possible; shared clears reduce death loops that stall BDA unlock timing.

Slayers farming Final Selection kills may hunt demon players in mixed zones. Demons regenerate differently but still die to coordinated Slayer groups — avoid AFK farming in contested areas. Learn your first BDA escape tool before roaming far from demon hubs.
